I enjoy gardening as a hobby and a leisure activity. Most my friends think it odd for a young person like myself to have such a hobby. They would rather be out playing football. They believe that most things grow naturally without any effort having to be put . I have tried to explain the great joy I derive seeing something planted grow and thrive while being carefully nurtured.

I suppose that I owe my interest gardening to my parents, who are avid gardeners, to a large extent. It is not unusual to see both my parents and me pottering about the garden most evenings. As we live a house with a rather large compound, there is always plenty to do. Healthy and nutrient-rich soil are important as our garden are full all sorts trees and plants. During the months when rain is sparse, all the plants have to be watered daily, and during those months with heavy rainfall, we have to take care that precious nutrients the soil are not washed away. In a constrained area, this will lead to a depletion nutrients which have to be replenished time to time.

Our neighbours often remark that our house is the most beautiful and resplendent one the neighbourhood. This is since the variety flowering plants we have is kept well pruned to promote flowering all year round. Even though some plant takes up practically every square foot garden area, careful management the available area has given our house an uncluttered look. Fruit trees are a favourite for my father. We have rambutan, mango and banana trees our compound. My father has grown them to a certain height so it won't pose a problem to my immediate neighbours. Some people do not appreciate a garden all strewn with dead leaves.

All all, I find gardening to be a most satisfying and fulfilling pastime which can contribute to a greener Maldives.
