The story Horatius and how he defended the bridge is a bright page the history Rome. A soldier with the help another could defend a narrow bridge against a big army was something marvellous. This is how it happened.

A rebel general was invading the Republic Rome, and to reach Rome, Horatius had to cross a narrow bridge the River Tiber. Horatius offered to defend the bridge while the city fathers pulled down the bridge. Taking another as his companion, Horatius went and stood the outer end the bridge. The enemy soldiers were standing before him. The rebel leader laughed when he saw the two men standing the bridge against a big army. He sent the giant a man his army to go and fight Horatius. Horatius stabbed him to death. Some more came the enemy side, and Horatius killed them all. Now the enemy leader was doubt whether to proceed further .

In the meantime, the demolition work the bridge was almost over, and the bridge shook the pillars. Horatius asked his companion to run for safety. Now the bridge fell with a big crash. Horatius did not mind it. But he jumped into the river, and though he was fully armed and with a deep wound the thigh, he swam across the swirling waters the Tiber and reached the other shore safely. A cry surprise and joy arose both the friends and the enemy. Horatius was honoured by the country. In memory him, a statue was raised later . Thus Horatius defending the bridge has become a classic hero.
