Discipline means learning to obey certain necessary rules of conduct. The very essence of discipline is obedience - obedience to rules, and the word derived from "disciple", a learner, pupil or follower of a teacher. Therefore, we may discuss the question from two points of view; the discipline training of an individual and the discipline, or order, maintained in a society or body of individuals.
A child's training is a good example discipline in the first sense. The first lesson it has to learn is obedience, and then it has to be taught how to behave - to avoid conduct that is considered unbecoming and wrong, and how to form good habits.
